Korean dramas are popular worldwide,
partially due to the spread of Korean popular culture, which is the "Korean Wave",
and their widespread availability via streaming services which often offer subtitles in multiple languages.
How nice?!
I literally binge watched Cinderella and the four knights this passed weekend. Many K-dramas have been adapted throughout the world, and some have had great impact on other countries!
I don’t know since when K-drama became popular across the world though.
The first Korean Wave began in 1993 when the drama 'Jealousy' 질투 starring Choi Soo-jong and Choi Jin-sil
and 'Eyes of Dawn' 별은 내 가슴에 starring Park Sang-won and Choi Jin-sil were played in TV in China.
Then, in 1997, 'What Is Love' 사랑이 뭐길래was aired in China, too and it recorded the highest viewer rating ever among foreign dramas played in China. From then, the Korean Wave began! Have you heard of these dramas?
What is the meaning of ‘Hallyu’
The suffix'~ryu' , meaning a characteristic or unique trend, is appended with 'Han (韓)' meaning Korea.
And we would say ‘Hallyu’ together shortly.
'Hallyu' refers to the phenomenon of admiring and learning Korean culture such as Korean music, dramas, movies, fashion, games, food, and hairstyles, and Korean popular celebrities!
Did you notice there are some sort of common points in K-drama?
what are the Key features of K-dramas which appeal to worldwide audiences?
how about a love triangle?
rich boy poor girl?
plucky heroine, and cold, misunderstood boy who is ridiculously yet unrealistically handsome?
Most K-dramas values of family relationships, respect for parents, friendships and love which have a universal appeal, and they also manage to blend these traditional values with materialism and individualism which appeal to modern audience.
Almost every K-drama is related to the main characters overcoming all odds and working their way up from the bottom and such “rags-to-riches” stories have global appeal.
Comparing to Western dramas, K-dramas are generally less sexual and violent than the Western dramas. The delicate way of representing emotions and intense romantic passion without overt sexuality resonates further with viewers in Asian countries and the Middle East.
as K-dramas usually are designed to last a specified number of episodes,
the narratives are compact and the story is dedicated to a central theme.
The simple storylines make K-dramas easy to follow and make it easy to distinguish between good and evil roles. K-dramas rely more on dramatizing evolving relationships or conflicts between individuals, which make K-dramas more emotionally charged than the dramas in other countries and this helps hook the viewers.
A charming but ‘flawed’ female protagonist in K-dramas or like I mentioned earlier, having a wealthy and unusually good looking male cast inside or the side of disapproving mother-in-law, father in law, eager to mess up main relationships.
Do you know What the trendy scenes are in K-drama relationship?
They are doing Piggyback rides. At some point in the story, the leading lady will either drink too much soju, sprain her ankle, or faint at the discovery of some unknown and surprising fact. Some of the most charming can be seen in these dramas, ‘The 1st Shop of Coffee Prince,’ did you watch this? and ‘I Can Hear Your Voice.’
There are all kinds of back hugs – ‘don’t go’ back hugs, accidental back hugs, and apologetic back hugs.
One thing most people never understood is
how the main characters become deathly,
the day after getting caught in the rain, even if it's a light drizzle.
They are always feverish and dying.
You are not sugar, you won't melt.
