Please guess what we are talking about, when I was in Brisbane, back in Australia,

I was teaching Korean language to some students in University of Queensland.

All of students loved this K-pop group. Can you guess?!

I’m happy that we will talk about K-pop today!

ho doesn’t know BTS? My dad also knows them as Korea’s 비틀즈 Haha,

K-pops are so popular wherever we go, not just BTS’s song!

do you know why K-pop hit people’s heart across the world?

Addicting Melodies? Or Choreography, like dance performance?

K-Pop keeps amassing fans by utilizing strong storytelling in many songs and music videos.

And Pop music would be nothing without catchy hooks and sing-along lyrics. K pop is no different,

making use of melodies that are instantly stuck in your head.

And choreography, yes!

Groups not only sing and dance, but they also perform routines which are so complicated and challenging,

they would usually require truly professional dancers.

And since most students in many Asian countries are required to learn English from an early age,

singers frequently mix in English sayings with their lyrics.

BTS also known as the Bangtan Boys,

is a seven-member South Korean boy band that began formation in 2010

and debuted in 2013 under Big Hit Entertainment. Originally a hip hop group,

their musical style has evolved to include a wide range of genres.

Did you know that BTS was not as famous as like these days in Korea, back then?

They weren’t famous right from the start like some other K-pop idol groups.

They debuted in 2013 with ‘No More Dream’, which got some attention. But then, when they had a comeback with N.O, they failed to get any more attention.

When they were in interview about their success, they said  ‘We failed and tried again and people saw that process!’

I also believe that their failure made them more competent!

I ask one of BTS fans who is my closest friend why she likes BTS and she said that their lyrics were from their life and motivated by their real story!

YES,

their lyrics, often focused on personal and social commentary, touch on the themes of mental health, troubles of school-age youth, loss, the journey towards loving oneself, and individualism. Their work features references to literature and psychological concepts and includes an alternative universe storyline.

When was the beginning of worldwide popularity of BTS ?

The group's second Korean studio album, Wings (2016), was their first to sell one million copies in South Korea. By 2017, BTS crossed into the global music market, leading the Korean Wave into the United States and breaking numerous sales records. It is amazing!

They became the first Korean group to receive a certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) for their single "Mic Drop", as well as the first Korean act to top the US Billboard 200 chart with their studio album Love Yourself: Tear (2018). BTS also became the fastest group since The Beatles to earn four US number-one albums.

In 2020, BTS became the first all-South Korean act to reach number one on the Billboard Global 200 and US Billboard Hot 100 with their single "Dynamite" and remix of "Savage Love", and with the release of Life Goes On became the first group in chart history to have two number one Hot 100 debuts.

In addition, it is the fastest record since the Beatles' 2 months and 3 days in terms of the period. In addition, it is also the first group to enter the top spot in 'Hot 100' with two songs.

By the way, did you hear the song ‘Life goes on’? which is recent song of BTS!!!!!

BTS song, "Life Goes On" soars onto the Billboard Hot 100 songs chart at No.1. "Life Goes On" is also the first Hot 100 No. 1 in the chart's 62-year history sung predominantly in Korean.

(It is amazing, what is the song 62years ago? Anyway)

I’ve never seen this popularity of Korea’s group before in my life. I like this song, ‘Life goes on’, too, by the way.

It indicates like 'It's all gonna be okay!' It is a message of hope for everyone out there. As the lyrics go, 'Like an echo in the forest, the day will come around as if nothing happened. Yeah, life goes on'

What a beautiful line.

They attract one in every 13 foreign tourists that visited South Korea and were cited as one of the key acts in boosting global music sales to $19 billion in 2018. Wow, it is cool
